  The Arena
by Pieter11

Nīmes is the most Roman city of France, with some beautiful remaining of the Roman time in France. The city is really nice itself, with a southern atmosphere, wide streets, lots of shopping streets and a green and spacious city centre. But off course the main attractions are the three big Roman remainings in the centre.

- The Arena: the arena of Nimes is one of the remained ones of the Roman time. It used to give a place to 23.000 people. Most of the arena still is original, but the lower parts of the stands are rebuilt, because in the Medievals the rocks of this part were used to built houses with. Still the arena is used as a theater. For more information, check out my Nimes-page.

- The Maison Carré: this small building is the only thing remaining of the formerly huge forum of Nimes. This temple was dedicated to Julius Caesar. This is the best remained ancient building in France.

- Tour Magne: this used to be the highest tower of Nimes, in Roman times. Nowadays it“s 30 metres high and free to climb on. From the top you have a magnificent view of the city, including the Parc of Fountains down below.

Address: Nīmes, France
Directions: On the Autoroute du Soleil, 100 km“s north from Marseille.
