As you approach Calasetta from the sea, you will notice the town is perched on a rocky hill with a watch tower above.
Calasetta's history as a town started in 1769 when a group of Tabarkini (Ligurian colonists expelled from the island of Tabarka off the coast of Tunisia but originally from Pegli--a small town near Genoa) asked King Carlo Emanuele to have rights to settle this town. In fact, the dialect of the town, some 200 years later has nothing to do with the surrounding Sardinian, but is rather a fairly pure Genoese. (the town and island of Carloforte is the only other town in Sardinia with this dialect)
At the top of the town, you will see the Torre Spagnola which was built in the 1700's to protect the town from Barbary pirates.
