During a morning walk I just happened to look across the canal at one of the many building that appear to be tilting at almost impossible angles. As I brought it into focus through my lens, I noticed a very peculiar addition to the house. Closer inspection revealed that the door to the addition had its own house number meaning this wasn't an addition at all but rather a very narrow house. Click on the photo and you will see the house highlighted in the right side panel.
Some time in the history of Amsterdam, houses were taxed according to the frontage they occupied along the street. Here a clever architect decided that he didn't need such a grand and expensive entrance to his home and designed the front of his house, only about two hands width wider than an average doorway, to be a long hallway leading to the rest of the building located behind the other homes to either side.
