  St. George Church, Ecumenical Patriarchate
by terrycowan

My son and I attended a liturgy at St. George Church in the Ecumenical Patriarchate compound. The site is practically hidden, and somewhat hard to find. Not one, but two taxi drivers feigned ignorance of the site, and even took us in the opposite direction, which was our introduction into the underlying tension that still exists between Turkish society and the few Greek Orthodox remaining in Istanbul.

The church itself is not that old, for Istanbul--1700s, I believe. The bishop's throne is said to date from the Byzantine era. The day we were there, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew presided over the liturgy. The service, in Greek of course, was beautiful.
