"Aya Sophia" Hagia Sophia - Ayia Sofia - Ayasofya Tip by call_me_rhia

First a church, then a mosque, and now a museum. Aya Sophia has it all, I guess - and has witnessed quile a lot of Turkish history. it's my favourite address in Istanbul, for objective and subjective reasons.

Objectively it's an amazing building... not so much from the outside. Its sheer magnificence is best viewed inside: amazing Islamic plates and decorations amid remains of glittering bizantine mosaics. I have rarely seen such beauty.

The subjective reason is tied to some work done inside the museum by a local artist of the past, originally from my area and distantly related to some friends of mine. Remember the ugly dark yellow paint on the top floor? The one covering the mosaics? Well, a Swiss man called Fossati made it.

Big embarassement! And yet, every time I'm in Istanbul, I long to see his shame.
