For the very interesting and modern Haus der Geschichte, as this museum is called in German, the citizens of Bonn must be grateful to France's former President Mitterand. Having become a really good friend of Chancellor Kohl, he opened Kohl's eyes a bit for a legacy outside of politics. It was then basically Kohl's initiative to build a museum presenting the contemporary history of the Federal Republic of Germany. The museum opened in 1994 and has since received widespread acclaim. It is pretty much a "hands on" museum with many original pieces and documents. Both the West and East German developments from 1945 until our re-unification and beyond are displayed and explained in a concrete and entertaining way without losing depth. Much room for personal discoveries and journeys into your own life.
The HDG also has virtual exhibitions (also in English language) that can be accessed through its website (link below).
Because of the many interesting and lively displays, international visitors will also enjoy a visit, even though knowledge of the German language is essential for getting the full picture. There are no English descriptions, but you can get a translation booklet at the information counter, and there also are English language guide tours. Paid for by the German taxpayers, i.e. Free Admission. Open daily except Monday from 9 - 19.
