Modern Damascus spreads for miles, a huge, congested mass of pollution and concrete punctured by a few parks and gardens, roundabouts with fountains and the tall spires of minarets. There's little here to recall the earthly paradise of the gardens and orchards for which the city was renowned.
For all that, there are still some places of interest and appeal. Some lovely mosques, the idiosyncratic Hejaz station, elegant buildings from the French Mandate period, the treasure-filled National Museum and the rather bizarrely sited Military Museum next door, the Salihiya district on the lower slopes of Jebel Qassioun, and the heights of the mountain itself, enough to fill another full day, but so much better to take at a more leisurely pace.
