Syria is sweet tooth heaven. All those delicious pastries, filled with nuts or soft cheese, dripping with honey and syrup. Melt-in-the-mouth shortbreads (ma'amul) with a filling of walnut paste or figs. Marzipan fruits, pistachio studded nougats, fennel seed cachous, sugar-coated roasted chickpeas. Licorice from Iskenderun. Rose petal and orange blossom jams. Smooth milk puddings. Halwa. Mastic icecream. Glace fruits of every kind - prunes, apricots, tiny mandarins, prickly pear and baby aubergines, some stuffed with pistachios.
Huge snails of crisp deepfried mushabbak drenched in syrup - he'll break a bit off for you to try it. Dates from Palmyra and fresh pistachios (fistouk) from Aleppo in their soft pink shells.
Try some, buy some - to eat in the shop with a glass of tea or to take away with you. Who cares about calories?
