by cheesecake17

Japan's most important temples and shrines have attracted crowds of pilgrims and tourists, resulting in street blocks, city districts and whole towns, providing visitors with lodgings, food and souvenirs.

In Kyoto

Kiyomizudera District
The narrow streets ascending the slope to Kiyomizudera, one of Kyoto's most popular temples, are lined by many old buildings, shops and restaurants.

to get there,
Kiyomizudera can be reached from Kyoto Station in about 15 minutes by bus.

Take bus number 100 or 206 and get off at Kiyomizu-michi or Gojo-zaka, from where it is a 10-15 minute uphill walk to the temple.

In Ise

Oharaimachi is the old street leading to the Inner Shrine of Ise.
It is lined by many Edo Period style buildings, some of which are originals while others are reconstructions.

to get there,
a few meters from the Uji Bridge, the main entrance to the Inner Shrine.

The Outer and Inner Shrines are located several kilometers apart from each other.

The Outer Shrine can be reached in a 5 minute walk from the JR or Kintetsu Stations.

Bus numbers 52 and 55 depart just outside the Outer Shrine for the Inner Shrine. The ride takes about 15 minutes
