Roman bridge on the way to Cyrrhus
by TheWanderingCamel

As well as all the city itself has to offer, Aleppo is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding countryside. Probably the most-visited place that is easily reached from the city is the Byzantine monastery complex of St Simeon, the Stylite (Qala'at Sima'an) which lies about 40km north. While you are there, take the time to look at the Dead City that serviced the pilgrims to the great monastery and walk a little way at least up the processional route those pilgrims would have taken up to the basilcas on the hill.
If you wanted to explore further afield, you can easily extend your journey on that day to travel north through the lovely Afrine River valley to Ain Dara and Cyrrhus.
This is a particularly lovely day's outing but places to eat, once you leave St Simeon, are few so you might like to take a picnic with you.

Directions: This is an all day trip of about 200km. It's possible to do it by a mix of public transport, taxis and maybe some hitching, but Cyrrhus particularly is very isolated and it could end up being a long, long day.
