Sunset at Bakheng Hill, Angkor Wat: 41 reviews and 76 photos

  Phnom Bakheng

A sunset at Phnom Bakheng should not be missed. Unfortunately, everybody else knows this too and the hill turns into a big circus. You can also get a very good view of Angkor Wat in the distance from here

The temple was built by Yasovarman I (889-910) and was the first of the mountain temples. Bakheng is a classic temple-mountain with seven levels that symbolize the seven heavens of Hindu mythology. Originally, 109 towers graced the phnom, corresponding to the animal zodiac cycle.

There was a Vietnamese communications tower placed on top of the temple but it has thankfully been pulled down.

Directions: 400m south of Angkor Thom
