  River and ruins
by TheWanderingCamel

The walls of Dura Europos rise up from the flat surrounding land to height of nearly 9m in places, and their sheer length and size lead you to believe that within them must lie the ruins of a great city. Inside, however, all is desolate and bare with just scattered tumbles of stone breaking the surface here and there. There's little to suggest that this was the site of one of the most significant archaeological finds in all Syria. You have to go to Damascus to see unique frescoed synagogue that was discovered here in the 1920s. All there is to do at Dura Europos now is walk over its vast emptiness as you try to decipher the scant evidence that remains of this once-important city, and admire its incomparable setting - high above the Euphrates River and overlooking the peaceful rural scene of the fertile region known as the Jazera that stretches to the horizon on the other side.

Directions: 93 km south of Deir ez-zor, on the road to Mari.
