After the long drive across the desert, a few scattered towers are the first things you see, and then, rising up out of the sand - the long colonnade of the Cardo Maximus, the massive Temple of Bel a solid mass on the other side of the road and there it is, the great city of Queen Zenobia, the desert queen who defied the Romans. Once the hugely wealthy trading city of Palmyra, now a golden ruin stretching out before you.

Do allow yourself time to explore the city properly, to walk its streets and market place, sit awhile in the little theatre, visit the temples and army camps of long-dead gods and generals, pay respect to the dead in their tower tombs and wonder at what else lies buried still beneath the ground all around.
