The Muzeum Narodow is home of the most important collection of Polish Art in Poland. That does not mean this is entirely interesting museum as I was not overly impressed by many of the works on display here. Probably the most important rooms in the gallery feature exhibits of Polish Medieval Art. These were truly exquisite and it is worth visiting the gallery just to these works. There are many fine paintings featured in the 19th century collection but few are truly extraordinary. The fact is few artists from Poland are well known outside of this country and there was little in the way of groundbreaking art being produced here. Finally there is a collection of foriegn art mostly represented by Italian, Dutch and German artists of note. Probably the most important such work is "The Madonna and Child with St. John" which was by workshop of Botticelli.
A note about this museum. It is a big grey grotesque building and probably the ugliest in Warsaw. And here is a surprise, it was not built by the communists but was constructed before they came back in the 1930's. It looks like an overgrown bomb shelter.
It cost 13zl to see the museum. It is open everyday but Monday at staggered hours
