Rockefeller Center was originally planned as a mini-city within Manhattan. Wholescale detonation of the neighborhood allowed for the creation of a dozen or so buildings to stand in place of more than 200 that were converted to rubble. Apart from the centerpiece (the cold, lifeless GE Building), one can eat, relax, enjoy the flowers, skate in the rink, approve the reliefs on the buildings surrounding the plaza, have a cup of coffee at the nearby shop, attend a performance at Radio City Music Hall or tour the NBC studios for an insider's look at the "Today" show. The enormous concourse below has shops and restaurants, and another of New York's easily accessible public restrooms (see my Warnings tip).

Address: 47th-51st Streets and between 5th and 6th Avenues.
Directions: B,D,F,V Subways to 47-50th Sts, Rockefeller Center
Phone: (212) 332-6868
