I used Cracow Tours for the tour to Auschwitz and was very satisfied. Natrually, this tour is very depressing and difficult to go through. But at the same time the tour is very important for remembering what man did to man.
I had just started reading the book "This was for the gas, Ladies and Gentlemen" by the survivor non Jewish Pole Tadeusz Borowski. I would strongly recommend reading this book before visiting Auschwitz. It puts so many things in place and one can visit and spot places that are mentioned in the book. It is very heavy reading. Borowski commited suicide in 1951. It is published by Penguin.
Auschwitz was the smaller of the camps. It was there Josef Mengele experimented on women and children to stop the continuation of the Jewish race. Most of the camp is intact including 30,000 pair of shoes, 7 tons of female hair, thousands of suitcases were found when the Russians liberated the camp in 1945. The items are now on display. The tour also includes the "Wall of death" which was used for executions.
Birkenau, aka Auschwitz 2, was the real horror camp. More than 1.5MM died in the camps combined. The trains would arrive at Birkenau and take prisoners to the gas chambers. 300 barracks were built for 200,000 prisoners. The sheer size is amazing when you stand there. At 475 acres, Birklenau was never more than half finished. The tour includes a visit to a barrack with the original wodden bed bunks. Most of the camp was destroyed before the liberations. The ruins, train tracks and guard tower and disturbing images.
