"Freedom from whom exactly ?" Freedom Monument - Liberty Statue Tip by sourbugger

  Freedom monument, Budapest
by sourbugger

The freedom monument, a woman holding a palm above her head stands proudly over Budapest, atop of the Gellert Hill.

It was put up the Soviets following their success in capturing the city from the Nazi occupiers. Many of course argue that they in turn became the occupiers. When the Iron curtain fell there was much talk about what was to be done. In the end the monument stayed, although the statue of the Russian soilder that accompanied it was removed.

Either way, it has not become an 'icon' of the city in the way that other such monuments have in other cities.

Access to the base is through the castle on the top of Gellert hill (see seperate tip)
