A vaulted stone passage to the left of the cafes outside the main souq leads you to the Souq ash-Shouna, Aleppo's designated handicraft souq. As well as the usual array of handicrafts on sale, there are workshops where you can watch artisans at their craft -weaving, making musical instruments and so on as well as shops selling an array of impressive metalwork, antique jewellery, traditional embroidered dresses and more. Prices are perhaps a little higher than you may pay elsewhere, but the quality is assured.

What to buy: Lovely textiles, intricate traditional wedding head-dresses, the most impressive door knockers (pity you can't buy a wonderful old Aleppine door to go with them),

Directions: Across the road from the Citadel and to the left.
Theme: Local Craft
