Inside St. Peter's Basilica is an ancient bronze statue of St. Peter. It portrays the saint preaching and giving a blessing. In his hand he is holding the keys to the kingdom of heaven. This famous statue has attracted people from all over the world.
In the Middle Ages pilgrims who reached Rome, touched and kissed the foot of the statue and prayed to St. Peter asking that he be merciful and open the gates of heaven for them if they died during the pilgrimage. This custom is maintained until today, and from millions of people touching the statue, St. Peter has his right toes worn down.
On 29 June, the feast of St. Peter, the statue is clothed with an amice, alb, tiara, stole, red cope and a ring so that it practically seems to come to life.
[Sidenote - Eva persisted and finally got her way with me standing in front of the statue for a snap touching St. Peter's foot while a host of oriental onlookers giggled. I shied away embarassed. Don't be! It's a very done thing.]
Address: St. Peter's Basilica
Directions: Walk in straight the middle isle; the statue is located on the right side before the altar.
