"The Jain Sculptures in Gwalior Fort" India Off The Beaten Path Tip by Paul2001

On the South side of Gwalior, just inside of the gateway are a serious of amazing Jain sculptues that had been cut into the cliffside. Some of these sculptures are huge standing over 17m high. The carvings were originally cut in the 15th century. The images are divided into 5 groups leading down the road to the gate. They are all in a remarkable state of preservation.
What sort of struck me as odd about the sculptures is that I was not only the soul Westerner there observing them, I was the only person there at all except for some school kids who simply walked down the road not giving a hoot for the sculptures. Too many people seem to pass up these stunning sculptures along with the Fort itself as they rush through India.
