The building of the sea-fortress of Suomenlinna started in 1748 in answer to an urgent need to fortify Helsinki, the war having been lost. Described at the time as the Gibraltar of the North, Suomenlinna was build on an outlying island and marked a turning point in the history of Helsinki, as it brought prosperity to the town.
Its name means ?The Fortress of Finland? in Finnish. It actually had several names in the course of the conquests : ?Sveaborg?, meaning ?Fortress of Sweden, at the time it was part of the Kingdom of Sweden; then ?Viapori? when it belonged to Russia.
