The octagonal shaped Temple of the Holy Sepulchre is a 1000 year old Romanesque shrine. It is connected to the Aquleia basilica by the corridor shown on the right of the photo. The original roof was destroyed by an earthquake about 600 years ago. The replacement wooden roof is at an elevation below the top of the damaged walls. I believe that the very simple interior represents the sepulchre that Christ was buried in 1000 years earlier. It is primarily a place of meditation.
