Parco Archaelogico della Neapolis, Siracusa: 12 reviews and 23 photos
One enters the Zone from the bus-stop-parking area proceding downhill(east) by the Viale Paradiso (a paved road with no traffic, only vendors). On the rt. is the Church of S. Nicolo(closed). Going further down, seen on the lt. is the entrance to the Amphitheater( admission only with ticket) and still further at the bottom of the hill (on the lt. seen thru a fence) is the Altar of Hieron II. You have walked 500m. To the rt.,In a small bldg., is the ticket office(no pamphlets). The ticket is for the entire park. The path then divides going left to the theater and rt. to the Latomia ("quarries")del Paradiso, which consists of what has overgrown and been nurtured in association with the 2 famous caverns(grottos). The quarries were dug out of the stone underlying this immense hill. This area is what most tour groups and visitors see, but beyond the theater to the east is an area with a nympheum and the Street of Tombs. (we did not go out there either because a heavy rain diminished our visit). Also from the park area an upper stone wall is seen (better from outside on the via Teracati) with the Necropoli delle Grotticelli. On your way back use your ticket to visit the large RomanAmphitheater.A total visit takes 1-3 hrs with increasing walking and climbing the farther one goes. A good map is always of value. For more details about each of the sights see our Travelog titled Neapolis.
Address: Via del Teatro Greco, Siracusa
Directions: Off season we parked easily just off via Teracati at the bus park. The city bus (#1)stops here. The bus starts on Ortygia near the P.O. and goes past the Stazione(I think). If you walk from the Orsi museum it is 1km to this entrance area.
