"The Se" Sé de Lisboa Cathedral - Igreja de Santa Maria Maior Tip by kidkilowatt

  The Cloisters at the Se
by kidkilowatt

The Se is a Romanesque cathedral that is located in the Alfama district, just a quick walk down from the Castelo de Sao Jorge. There are several ticket options allowing you differing degrees of access to the grounds of the Se- I would say, pay full price and see everything. There is some particularly interesting artwork depicting St. Vincent- if you have just come from the multimedia presentation at the Castelo de Sao Jorge (which I recommend doing first) you will be well acquainted with the significance of St. Vincent in Portugal's history. This cathedral was built over what used to be the main Moorish mosque in Lisbon. When we visited, they were in the middle of a major archeological excavation and if you check out the cloisters, you can also see the archeological remains of a moorish village. It's pretty cool. Definitely do not miss the Se. Tickets are roughly between 1.00 euro and 3.50 euros. The Se is open Tues-Sat, 9-7 and Sun-Mon, 9-5.
