The Orchard is way, way, way off the beaten restaurant track, lying in its own grounds in the north-eastern suburbs. Owned by three women - two Chinese and one laowai - The Orchard is one of Beijing's finest restaurants, yet is very much a family affair. The Sunday lunchtime buffet is well-known, and it is best to book at least a week ahead for a table between 12 and 1; ad-hoc arrivals are best made after 2pm.
The restaurant is housed in a number of buildings pulled together by a covered courtyard, complete with ponds, plants and tasteful furnishing, many of which are for sale. Huge open windows look out over two lakes, and many diners sit out under the trees for coffee and tea after lunch.
The Orchard also has its own shop, selling a variety of high-end reproduction furniture and designer jewellery and clothing, all hand-made locally or in nearby provinces. RMB900 for a cashmere jumper sounds a lot, but they look stunning. Or what about RMB3,500 for an original Beijing Municipal Government chair, believed to be from the 1950s, and reupholstered in cracked, creased burgundy leather?
It's a relaxing atmosphere where the service is just impeccable, and the ambience probably unmatched in China.
The Orchard is a long way from the centre of Beijing (say 30 minutes by taxi from the Kempinski area) but if you have a really special meal planned for Beijing, then this is the place to come.
I'm not going to try and explain the location (it's about 10 minutes off the Airport Expressway at Junction 4), so you should phone ahead and get them to fax you a map or speak to your taxi-driver. (The 944 bus goes past the gate but there are no signs outside to suggest that there is a top restaurant down the lane!)
