Tuol Sleng Museum, Phnom Penh: 90 reviews and 183 photos
Though this was one of most unpleasant places I?ve ever visited, I would rate Tuol Sleng Museum as the true must see of Phnom Penh as it is only through experiencing just a piece of the horror that the Khmer Rouge inflicted on Cambodian humanity can we hope to avoid such atrocities in the future. And you will get a very real feeling for just what happened in this ordinary looking high school set right in a nice neighborhood of the capital. For the $2 entrance fee you can wander the grounds on your own and read about what Rouge leader Pol Pot ordered to be carried out. You?ll find endless rooms full of metal beds that prisoners were chained to and tortured before burning them alive to a charred remain. Then a picture was systematically taken of each victim. These sickening photos are on display in each room as well. What makes matters worse, the perpetrators were adolescents enlisted by the crazy leader! One is quickly overwhelmed with what happened and we soon found ourselves out in the courtyard, sick to our stomachs in contemplation over what makes even Hitler seem tame.
Address: Corner of Street 113 and Street 350
Directions: This is in a nice area of town south of the Independence Monument and a nice stroll from the more touristy part of the city.
