  Hanging Rock, Dane Valley
by Ben-UK

Favorite thing: A circular walk from Danebridge, just outside Wincle, takes you past a local landmark, Hanging Rock from the top of which are fine views down over Swythamley and the surrounding countryside.

On the front of the rock is a plaque memorial to Colonel Brocklehurst who was killed in Burma in 1942 -- the Brocklehurst estate covered a wide local area. One interesting point is that before the war, Colonel Brocklehurst was a game warden in the Sudan and when he returned to England, he opened a zoo at nearby Swythamley -- during World War 2 the animals were released as there was no food for them and wallabies from the zoo survived and bred in the nearby area called The Roaches -- I saw one myself many years ago but they certainly startle you as you don't expect to see wallabies wild in England.

The village of Wincle (near to Macclesfield)
is south of the A54 Congleton to Buxton road.
