Would have been nice to learn how they were built.

Meteora is located roughly in the central part of the crescent shape of Greece. It's about a 3 hour drive from Thessaloniki. I think it's a bit longer from Athens. Regardless, it is worth the journey. I went here with friends for a day trip from Thessaloniki. Left around 9am. Arrived around 12:30pm after a stop for coffee.

It's a fantastic area. Really amazing. The monasteries are perched hundreds of feet up on pillars of rock that abruptly jump up towards the sky from the ground. The views are great. The rock formations are amazing to think about how they were formed. There are 6 main monasteries that are open to the public. EVERYONE must wear long sleeves and have their legs covered. In the biggest monastery, the women must even wear skirts over their pants (they have them at the entrance for no fee).

The monasteries were great to walk around, but this place draws a lot of tourists. There were no guides or anything at each place to give any history or facts - none that we saw anyhow. At the biggest monastery, there was a small museum, but nothing in it seemed directly related to the monastery.
