Well, any way I look at it, Eritrea is hardly a shoppers' paradise. much of what is for sale in Asmara, be it clothing or "typically African" carvings, has in fact been imported from elsewhere.
If you are desperate to find some authentic local handicrafts, the markets are the places to head for. You can find some nice, rustic pottery used for traditional coffee ceremonies, and also some interesting woven trays. You can also find some old, traditional silver jewellery and maybe swords.
