Located on the only hill in Phnom Penh, Wat Phnom is a the focal point for many Buddhist ceremonies and is the most sacred site in Phnom Penh. The original pagoda was built in 1373 to house four Buddha statues said to have been deposited by the waters of the Mekong. According to legend, a Lady Penh founded the monestary. Thus the city is named after this pagoda - Phnom (Hill) Penh.

Just outside of the Wat are a number of fortune tellers, mystics, and faith healers. There are also elephant rides around the site.
