The Independence Monument was built in 1958 to commemorate Cambodia's independence from France in 1953. It is sometime known as the Victory Monument and wreaths are laid here on national holiday. The monument was designed by Khmer architect Van Molyvann. It consists of five levels adorned by nagas (the mythological, multi-headed snakes).
