Velvet Margarita: "Where's the Velvet Elvis?" Los Angeles Restaurant Tip by Etoile2B

Los Angeles Restaurants: 920 reviews and 1,035 photos

From the outside, Velvet Margarita looks like any other club in the neighborhood, but once inside this kitschy Mexican bar and restaurant, you'll forget you're in Hollywood. The decor, designed by the owner and his wife, is original and fun. You expect to find a velvet Elvis painting hanging on the walls at every turn. In fact, extra large flat screens above the bar run old Elvis flicks and the like with English subtitles all night long. The bright interior design elicits the tacky side of Mexico tourists expect in border towns like Tijuana - but tacky doesn't mean tasteless. It works at Velvet Margarita, for sure. The walls are covered in velvet and wallpaper that brings back memories of my grandmother's house when I was a child. The owner created a menu based on his own grandmother's recipes from Mexico. The result is an authentic yet elegant presentation that's completely affordable - a major plus in this neighborhood. They also serve food late into the evening, making it an appropriate pit stop for a late night snack. If you're just in the mood for some drinks with friends check out the bar, or better yet, grab some space on their covered patio out back. This unique eatery makes it's distinctive mark on the uber trendy Hollywood club scene and is more than a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Velvet Margarita is definitely worth the trip over from the other side of town. This Westside Girl plans to return again soon.

Favorite Dish: Try the turkey empanadas to start and the chicken enchilada for your entree. Yummy. No one was disappointed with anything on the table. Every meal is complimented with red tortilla chips and a trio of salsas and dips. Keep the queso pinto dip coming!!!
