This is for sure the symbol of Sydney and paerahps one of the most beautyful buildings in the world.
As recently i've read something about its history i'm going to tell about it:

The Sydney Opera House was planned and builded between the 50's and the 60's of last century after the requests of Sir Eugene Goossens, director of the synfonic orchestra of sydney, to realize a new auditorium for concerts.
The Opera House offered as well to Sydney the possibility to compete with Melbourne that, at that time, was the most important city in australia ( in fact the olympic games in 1956 were in Melbourne).
So the decision of making something of special was taken and, among lots of architect who presented their ideas on the contruction of the new Opera House, the winner, nominated by an american architect of Finnish origins, Eero Saarinen, was the Danish architecht Jorn Utzon.
He presented the new Opera house and, though it was a very difficult thing, after 10 -11 years the Sydney Opera House that we know nowadays was ready to host the most important concerts in Australia.
