The Wawel castle functioned as the residence of the Polish rulers from the mid-11th to the early 17th century. The present structure incorporates Romanesque fragments and considerable Gothic parts.

Wawel Hill is accessible to visitors daily, from April to September: 6.00 a.m.-8.00 p.m., and from October to March: 6.00 a.m.-5.00 p.m.
The arcaded courtyard of the Royal Castle is closed half an hour before the shutting of the gates of the hill.
