Favorite thing: The island lies 40 kms north west of Rhodes and close to the coast of south-west Turkey. and is approximately 13 kms in length and 9.5 kms across at its widest point.
The distance from Pireaus is 230 n.m.
The harbour is like an amphi-theatre with multicoloured two or three storey 19th century neo-classical old houses and churches with coloured domes on the hillside.
Kastro is overlooking the harbour with the settlement of Chorio and dominated by the Church of Megali Paniagia as well as the ruins of the castle.
Yalos is the area surrounding the harbour.
The island's capital is situated at the northern part and consists of Yialos (the port), Kato Poli (or Simi) and Ano (Upper) Simi.
The highest point Ano (Upper) Symi is dominates by the Castle of the Knights of St. John.
Symi's neoclasssical houses are coloures in warm pastel colours with balconies and red tile roofs.
The traditional village of Emborios is Symi's second port.
The Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis is located on the southwest coast.
The Monastery was built in the early 18th century and overlooks the bay and contains many Byzantine frescoes and carved iconostasis.
The original church was built in 450 AD and rebuilt in 1783.
