  La Orotava
by steventilly

La Orotava is at the heart of the Orotava Valley, one of the most fertile regions of Tenerife. In the past it was the town where the rich merchants all had their villas and mansions and with Puerto de la Cruz as the port for La Orotava.
It remains largely unspoiled in its historic centre, the streets crammed with the traditional balconied townhouses with their open internal courtyards. Some have been convereted into craft shops, museums, restaurants and hotels, but they still retain their charm and character.
In addition to these townhouses there are also a collection of Gofio mills, Gogio being the old staple food of the Guanches, still found in he island be it tradionally made or mass produced. In La Orotave we found a restaurant that served Gofio in various guises and visited a working mill.

Directions: La Orotava is about 30 minutes by bus, up in the hills above Puerto de la Cruz.
