Obelisco: "Obelisco" Top 5 Page for this destination Beijing Restaurant Tip by mke1963

Beijing Restaurants: 709 reviews and 938 photos

Obelisco appeared in 2004 in an unusual, but impressive grey brick building, framed by a huge screen wall punctuated by arches. Alongside is a one-third scale of the obelisk in Buenos Aires, so you would be right in surmising that this is.....and Argentinian restaurant.
Now Argentinian restaurants can be overbearing, with vast platefuls of cow lashed across the table and firey sauces ready for use somewhere. Obelisco seems a bit more refined, although it is still predominantly a carnivores place. It is decidedly upmarket with a minimalist interior.
The service is very good, and some waiters simply refuse to speak Chinese or English - only Spanish. This actually adds a lot to the ambience, because we really feel it is like visiting Argentina.....having to struggle with Spanish words learnt long ago. It wouldn't work everywhere, but it does here. Nice touch.

Favorite Dish: The huge selection of bread pre-appetizer was just too good to miss, but our kids fill up on it.
All the meals come without potatoes or vegetables so you need to order them.
The highlight....funnily enough, one of the sides: the creamed spinach! They add something which just makes it the star of the evening.

Obelisco is a long way out of town, but worth the trip for a special, romantic or business meal. It is just off Jungshun Lu at the WAB junction (on the right).
