Down the centruries, many sackings, sieges and reconstructions have created a composite of Roman, Medieval and later building, but these are still the most complete town wallsin Europe.
You don´ t have to do the whole two miles, but do get the kids to look out for the long marks in the stone where Medieval archers sharpeed their arrows - there are some very clear examples on the stretch overlooking Chester Cathedral.

Address: Chester tour
Directions: Best access to the city walls is from Pepper Street by the Roman Amphitheatre and near the visitor Centre.
