The Mall's name originates from 'palle-maille', a game played in the 17th century which was a crossbetween croquet and golf.
It is a real treat to stroll along the Mall. I never knew about the 'club' culture of The Mall until I researched it... you learn something new everyday :)
When there are special visits by presidents or prime ministers, they often line The Mall with the flags of that country.
My husband was in London when then-President Nelson Mandela came to London in the 1990's.. and all the way down there were South African flags on The Mall. It looked spectacular he says!!!
The courseway is busy with London traffic and the Queen looks on from her vantage point in the Palace!
