The pyramids of Guimar are similar to those found in South & Central America and their building dates from the same period. Originally the ones here lay half buried and people thought that what they could see of them were merely walls laid by local farmers. recent excavations have proved this not to be the case and the full scale of the pyramid site can now be seen.
An introductory film show shows the history of the Pyriamids and something of the theories behind tham, as well as showing striking similarities between not only the Pyramids but also other artefacts (pottery, art, jewellery) found here and in South America.
The theory is that there was transatlantic comminications between the peoples of the Canaries and South America, something that was previously thought impossible.
Entrance is 9.5 Euro per person, which is quite expensive!
Directions: Guimar is about 6km uphill from exit 11 of the TF1 motorway. It's hard to get to by bus from Las Americas, easier from Santa Cruz. The streets of the town had large dogs wandering about and chasing cars. We were glad to be in a taxi and not on foot!
