  The La Americana Restaurant
by Bwana_Brown

After a very full day of walking to the downtown area in the heat, followed by an afternoon in the Recoleta district, we were not in the mood for a big restaurant meal - we meant to go to an evening Tango show anyway. Looking for something simple and close-by, we consulted our Loney Planet guide book. Lo and behold, it mentioned La Americana as a good spot for some of the local take-away food, called 'empanadas'. I remembered walking past this restaurant only two blocks down Callao from our hotel!

Favorite Dish: La Americana specializes in empanadas and pizzas. You can order to either eat in the restaurant or get something 'to go'. The procedure is to get in line for the cash counter to order your selection, pay-up and receive a slip with your order on it. Then, approach one of the main food counters where someone will take your ticket and whip your food off the shelves behind (something like in a doughnut shop).

We did not know what we were doing and went directly to the food counters. Luckily, one of the older guys there took pity on us and processed our order anyway! (see next Tip)
