Part 2 of the series of Days Thou Shalt Stay Off the Roads in Norway:

June 7th, a 2005 Special: 100th anniversary of Norway as an independent state; expect trouble. But in 2006 again you wouldn't have known - it's not a holiday.

June 23rd: St.Hans, it is supposed to be the Mid-summer Festival, but that is actually on the 21st, and plainly forgotten. Public transport schedules are not affected, but everybody is in a party mood and beaches and local transportation may be full. This is a night party, so daytime is fine.

Merchants' and city authorities' summer markets and closures of the city centres take place between late June and end of July, only locally advertised and for a limited time.

July: 3 last weeks - fellesferien (The Common Summer Holiday). Ouch, don't try to get out on the road the first and last day of this summer holiday period. Those days are terrible for hitchhikers as well - no empty cars and little in terms of utility and buiness transportation. Days to watch out for in 2005 are 8/9 July and 30/31st July.

People pick up lost time from May in September-November.. Norwegians actually work in this period.

Early December: opening of the Christmas streets one fine afternoon when you'd calculated to drive into town. Blocked city centre roads. Changeable dates.

23rd December: Men always do their last minute shopping on this day unless it's a holiday. A real crush in the city centres. Public transport is still ok.

24th December: the main day for Norwegian Christmas celebrations, and it gets very quiet, all businesses and most restaurants close. Public transport grounds to a halt.

25th-26th December: No business, limited public tranportation.

27th December - public transport again on track, but suddenly everybody wants to travel again... full crush.

31st December, New Years Eve: toward the evening public transport ceases to exist again, for the last time this year....

That's about it... For road closures due to bad weather, call:
