While in Canberra, I took in the National Gallery of Australia. Although it's pernament collection is hardly outstanding it still has some works by the some heavy hitters like Rubens (a self portrait) and Monet. Appropiately enough there is a protrait of the first European to make to Australia, Abel Tasman, with his family by the notable Dutch artist Cuyp. The gallery does host alot of worthy exhibitions with may make or break your visit. There was a collection of very highly regarded 20th century artists on exhibit there when I visited with made the whole experience both fruitful and annoying for it was very crowded. Naturally there are many exhibits of Australian artist by names that foriegners like me might be unfamiliar with.
The National Gallery of Australia is open from 10am to 5pm daily. The pernament collection is free but special really good exhibitions will cost you an admission price.
