"TUNIS - Medina & Suq" Tunisia Things to Do Tip by Umea6

Tunisia Things to Do: 757 reviews and 1,154 photos

Medinas once used their high walls as a shelter, a safe place to go to at night, to be safe of the intruders. The doors or BAB were closed for the night and everybody inside could have a good night sleep.

Streets in the suq are very narrow, so that the intruders had difficulties moving, they also had double doors at each end, so they couldn't escape. Hence the beautiful doors that can be found in Tunisia. They are beautifully carved, painted in different colours... a feast for the eyes. To knock at the door they often used a women's hand called Lucky Fatma Hand.
