Discovered by a Spanish explorer in 1775, the 22-acre island was named Isla de los Alcatraces (Island of the Pelicans). By 1854, the Army established a fortress as part of its harbor defense, then converted it into a military prison during the civil war. In 1934, Alcatraz was turned into a maximum security prison.
