Near Wilmington, Delaware, you can visit Henry Francis du Pont's transformed family home and farm. It's now the 175-room Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library with a private collection of American decorative arts from 1640 until 1860.
Over the 150 years before it became this museum, many members of the famed du Pont family made changes to it. Finally, when Henry Francis came into possesion of the home, he started collecting decorative arts from historic houses all over the East such as Charleston,Salem, and New York.
Once the collection grew so large, he decided to change the home into a museum. He built an addition which doubled Winterthur's size. This addition reached nine stories in some places!
Thank goodness Henry Francis du Pont had almost a "fetish" for collecting; we now have wonderful "treasures" from the 17th to the 19th centuries, authentic and intact.
The house became a museum in 1951 and opened to the public. Now, we are able to see all kinds and styles of furnture and other decorative arts, including paintings, pewter, glassware, ceramics, silver, textiles, and woodwork. It's truly amazing.
