To complicate matters, there is a number of territories with different status which are still under French sovereignty all around the world:

There are three overseas collectivities, which are Saint Peter and Miquelon (two small islands off the coast of Newfoundland), Wallis and Futuna (small islands-kingdoms in the Pacific) and Mayotte, the only islands of the Comores archipelago that decided to continue under French sovereignty. The latter is formally a "departamental collectivity" that might become a full-right department by 2010.

Then there is one overseas country, which is French Polynesia and a sui generis collectivity, which is New Caledonia.

Finally, there are the Overseas Territories, which comprise the French Southern & Antarctic lands (Kerguelen Islands, Corzet Islands and Amsterdam Island). Adelie Land is the name that the French section of Antarctica bears. However, the sovereignty was suspended since France signed the Antarctic Treaty.
