We found Le Chaland while exploring the Canal St. Martin area during our New Year's Eve trip in 2003 and on every subsequent trip to Paris we've returned here for at least one meal. It's a very popular place with the locals in this area and after eating here we could understand why. The food is reasonably cheap but the quality is excellent. The staff don't speak much English and on each visit we seem to be the only non-french there (always a good sign!).

One year after our first visit we came back again and almost got lost trying to find the place. But we found it in the end and thankfully nothing had changed: the same neighbourhood locals were here, still no sign of any tourists and, most importantly, the food was as good as before.
