chao tom or shrimp paste on sugar cane

Ben Thanh market is a great place to do some shopping before heading back home, especially if you are flying from Saigon. It is a busy place full of local flavor. We bought some Vietnamese coffee pots so we could buzz ourselves up after our return. While you are there, you may as well eat there as there are lots of great places that are cheap. The best part is you can see what you are getting and can just point.

Favorite Dish: We had bun chao tom. This is made by making a paste out of some spices, vegetables, and shrimp. This is then cooled to make it malleable. It is then formed around a sugar cane and grilled. This is then placed on a bowl of bun, thin rice vermicelli along with mint and coriander leaves and pickled vegetables. It may sound bizarre but it?s very tasty and worth a try for 25,000 dong (about $1.50) for two portions.

Address: corner of D Le Loi & D Ham Nghi
Price Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: This is on the way between the Pham Ngu Lao area and either the Reunification Palace or the Dong Khoi area of town. It is easily reached on foot.
