Located in the southeast part of the island, in Mar de Fora (therefore, facing the ocean), Praia do Leão is the longest beach.
It´s named after a big round rock at the front of the beach that, in a certain angle, looks a lion laying down (Lion´s beach).
The entrance to the beach is usually closed, since it´s the place usually chosen by the turtles to berry their eggs...so don´t go there with the expectation to stroll around the shore! The entrance in the beach is prohibited from january to june, but that won´t by a problem since you will see it all from a hill, with a very nice view!
All beaches from Mar de Fora have a stronger tide, since they face the open sea but even with strong waves the water has that transparent, deep turquoise aspect...just like this one....
